Skin Types

There are five different skin types which effect what make up you use as an artist. These include normal, oily, dry, sensitive and combination, which is when they have more than one skin type.

Normal Skin Type- this is when the skin isn’t too oily or too dry, has no sever sensitivity. The complexion is usually radiant and has barely visible pores or imperfections. This skin works with any foundation therefore is the easiest skin type to work with.

Dry Skin- This usually depends on the factors, when there are drying factors the skin can peel, crack, become irritated and inflamed. It can be made worse by the weather, indoor heating, long baths/showers, medication, aging, ultraviolet radiation and ingredients in soaps and cosmetics. When you have dry skin your pores are almost invisible, the skin is rough and dull, you can have red patches, there is a lot less elasticity and more visible lines.

Oily Skin Type- Oily skin usually has enlarged pores, blackheads and blemishes and the skin is dull or shiny. Certain factors can change the intensity of the skin type such as hormonal imbalances, stress and exposure to heat. This sort of skin needs a gentle cleanser and products should have “noncomedogenic” on the label, as this will not clog pores. An oil-based foundation is best for this skin type.

Sensitive Skin Type- To work out how to work with sensitive skin you need to learn the triggers and try and avoid them during work. Signs of sensitive skin are redness, burning, dryness and itching. The best products for this skin are hypoallergenic foundations, for example Clinique.

Combination Skin Type- this is a mixture of skin types, for instance they could be dry in some areas but oily in the T-Zone. This requires different types of skin care for particular areas. Examples of this skin type are blackheads, overly dilated pores and shiny skin. When choosing a foundation for this skin, you work with the prominent problem such as an oily T-Zone.

Older skin type- when skin gets older the outer layer thins; the pigment containing cells decrease and blood vessels become more fragile. The skin also produces less oil therefore becomes more dry and itchy. Therefore using a moisturising foundation is the best option for this skin type. For example mac face and body.

Men’s Skin type- if men have perfect skin then all that’s really necessary is a Matte primer on their T-Zone, especially if their looks meant to be natural. IF you need a little bit of colour use a coloured moisturiser.

Young Children- the skin will usually be in good condition so only a coloured moisturiser is necessary.
